Veneers

Due to their powerful ability to create almost any desired look, dental veneers have become one of the most popular cosmetic dental treatment options available.

What Are Dental Veneers?

Dental veneers are a popular cosmetic dentistry treatment that can be used to completely change the appearance of your smile. They are thin, wafer-like shells used to cover the fronts of the teeth to give a smile a completely new look. Veneers are usually made from porcelain but sometimes are fabricated from composite resin.

What Issues Can Dental Veneers Address?

Dental veneers are a cosmetic treatment option that can address a variety of concerns with the appearance of your smile. Dental veneers can:

  • Cover permanent stains and discoloration
  • Create the appearance of a straight smile
  • Cover up gaps between the teeth
  • Correct the appearance of an irregularly shaped or sized tooth
  • Cover up chips and cracks
  • Change the overall look of a smile
  • Mask minor and major imperfections
  • Improve the symmetry and balance of a smile

Dental Veneer Treatment Options

Porcelain Veneers vs. Composite Resin Veneers

Porcelain veneers are the most popular type because they are more durable and look the most natural. Porcelain veneers, however, are permanent, which is why some patients choose non-permanent veneers made from composite resin.

Veneers for Front Teeth

Dental veneers are most commonly applied to the front teeth in a person’s mouth, as these teeth are the most visible.

Complete Smile Makeover

Veneers can also be used to achieve a completely new look with a comprehensive smile makeover of all visible teeth.

Correcting Minor Imperfections

Dental veneers can be applied to just one or two teeth to cover up minor imperfections and refresh the appearance of your smile.

What To Expect When You Get Veneers

The first step in getting dental veneers is a consultation appointment. During this appointment, we examine your teeth and discuss your treatment goals and expectations. During this appointment, we will work with you to develop a treatment plan and a design for your new set of dental veneers.

We then take digital scans of your mouth and send these to a dental manufacturer where your new set of dental veneers is custom-created. Once the veneers are ready, we will schedule you for a placement appointment.

To place dental veneers, our dentist must first prepare the front surfaces of the teeth by removing a thin layer of enamel. This makes room for the dental veneers to adhere comfortably and naturally to the front surfaces of the teeth.

We then apply a thin layer of dental cement and adhere the veneers to the front of each tooth. Once set, the treatment is complete.

How Long Do Dental Veneers Last?

The average lifespan of dental veneers can vary depending on a few factors. Typically, porcelain veneers last about 10 to 12 years, and composite resin veneers last for four to eight years before requiring restoration or replacement.

You can help to prolong the lifespan of your dental veneers by protecting them with a mouthguard during athletic activities and a nightguard if you suffer from sleep bruxism. Additionally, you should stop using tobacco products of any kind, avoid chewing on hard objects or foods, and limit your intake of highly pigmented foods and drinks.
